Did you know?

Dogs have sweat glands, but unlike people, they aren't used much for keeping body temperature within a range (an exception would be the American Hairless Terrier which sweats much like a human, all over its body). Dogs get most of their thermoregulation when overheated by panting. The dog's tongue is generally thin and contains many blood vessels close to the surface. The blood is cooled mostly by the evaporation of saliva from the tongue.

Did You Know??

After dogs and cats, fish are the next most popular pet in the U.S. with a population of about 24 million.

More than 5.2 million birds are kept as companion animals in the U.S.

More than 1.4 million households keep rabbits as pets.

About 735,000 snakes, 314,000 lizards, and 281,000 other reptilian animals are kept as pets in the U.S.

Food for thought..

All of the animals except for man know that the principle business of life is to enjoy it."

Adopting a Pet.

An easy way to make a make a house a home or even to find some unyielding loyaltypaw print is to adopt a pet. Places like the local SPCA, animal shelter or even online sites like Petfinder.com are great sources to find a pet.

"Homeless animals outnumber homeless people at least 5-to-1," says Bill Garrett, Executive Director of the Atlanta Humane Society and 28-year veteran of the humane organization. New shelters are being built and existing shelters are expanding to make room for these animals, but the proliferation of animal shelters is merely a symptom of a much larger problem shelters face. "A shelter is a box and the problem is outside the box," says Garrett. "Until people take responsibility for their animals by spaying, neutering and putting identification on their pets, there will always be a need for animal shelters."

Did You Know… In 7 years one female cat and her offspring can give birth to 420,000 kittens or only 1 out of every 10 dogs born ever finds a permanent home.

This is not to say everyone should or could afford to have a pet, but if you are thinking of getting one then a very economical and benevolent way would be to visit a shelter in person or online. Additionally the statement to have your pets spayed or neutered to help slow the overpopulation of pets goes without saying.
